Screens, Part 2

Hey there!

What's up?  I'm currently marveling at how long this post took me.  And trying to stretch my neck because it hurts now.

--------------------------------------------------

Last Monday I posted my thoughts and some information about screen time.  You can check out my post all about it <here>.  Now, let's dive into Part 2!

I spend a great deal of time on my phone/computer/TV.  Too much time.  Some of it is productive, such as blogging, my math program, talking with long distance friends and taking photos.  But I also do mindless things.  I look at Pinterest for hours and I spend altogether too much time on screens.

When I first asked myself this question, I wasn’t very sure.  So, I did some research and downloaded the Moment app.  It’s an app that tracks exactly how much time you spend on your phone.  Believe me, it’s more than you’d expect.

But if you don’t feel like downloading the app, you could answer these questions.

-         Do you sleep near your phone?

-         Is your phone near you for meals?

-         Do you have more than one social media site you check daily?

-         Do you watch TV/movies daily?

-         Would you answer a text before unloading the dishwasher?

-         Do you check your notifications before going to bed?

-         How about when you wake up?

-         Do you change your wallpaper monthly?

-         Do you know where your phone is?

-         Do you use your phone/laptop/tv daily?

If you answered ‘yes’ to four or more of these questions, you’re most likely addicted.  But don’t worry!  There is hope!

When trying to change something (the amount of time you spend on screens) you should start by changing little things.  Such as staying off your phone in the morning, not watching tv after dinner, etc.  Underneath you can see the challenge plan I’ve come up with.  It starts off very simply, but moves on fast.  Ending in a completely screen free day.  Pretty exciting, right?

The challenge begins on the 21st of June.  Don't forget!

Day 1
           Download Moment App
No screens for an hour after you get up

Day 2
Beat your phone time from yesterday*
No screens for 2 hours after you get up

Day 3
            Beat yesterday’s phone time
No screens for 3 hours after you get up
No screens for an hour before bed
Day 4
           Beat yesterday’s phone time
No screens for 4 hours after you get up
No screens for 2 hours before bed
Don’t use one app on your phone*
Day 5
            Beat yesterday’s phone time
            No screens until after lunch
No screens for 3 hours before bed
            Eliminate another app
Day 6
            Beat yesterday’s phone time
No screens until an hour after lunch
No screens for 3 hours before bed
            Eliminate another app

Day 7
            Beat yesterday’s phone time
No screens until 2 hours after lunch
            No screens after dinner
            Eliminate another app
Day 8
           Beat yesterday’s phone time
No screens until 3 hours after lunch
Eliminate all apps but, camera, phone, messages
           No screens after dinner
          No tv
Day 9
No screens for 4 hours after lunch
            No screens after dinner
           No phone

Day 10

           No screens!
*Moment tracks how much time you spend on your phone.  Simply spend less time than the day before.

*If your phone is Apple you can just make a folder and slowly add apps to it that you can’t use for the rest of the challenge.

This thing seriously took me so long.  Please appreciate it with me for a moment.

Let’s talk about how to actually make yourself stay off screens.  I usually cheat, thinking, “it’s okay, I’ll just check my notification real quick.”  He-he, as you’ve probably guessed (or experienced), it isn’t real quick.

So, how do you keep from it?  Let me answer your question with another question; what’s something you absolutely love doing?  Writing, drawing, acting, I’m just naming off all my hobbies, swimming, dancing?  Whatever it is that makes you feel empowered.  Think of that, and work your way towards improving.
Maybe you always look up painting on Pinterest to get inspiration (me) so you don’t even know where to begin without it.  Well, think of the people who came before and had to *gasp* live without Pinterest.

We should be able to draw inspiration from the world around us, without a tutorial on drawing noses.

So there we go.  The challenge is in.  You know what’s next?  SPREAD THE WORD!  We are starting this crazy challenge on Wednesday the 21st and going until the last day of June.  I don’t know if you’re excited, but guys, I’m really excited!  Please tell everyone you know and maybe get your whole family to participate.  Let’s see where we can take this!

Love,
Pip

Are you going to participate?
Are you as excited as I am?

  1. Oh my gosh, this is so COOL! I actually answered yes to four of them, BUT what I think I'm addicted to is WordPress. I literally have no social media, so it's not that, and I'm CONSTANTLY checking my WordPress notifications. So um... yeah. But this sounds so cool! I'm glad you're taking action to take care of this "problem". :)

    1. Thanks May! Really? That's so funny! Some! I'm always checking Blogger. It's kind of bad...
Thanks! I'd love it if you'd participate!

  2. This is such a neat challenge! Cutting off time from screens is a goal I'm striving to get through (the only exception is my iPad, because the web browser crashes a whole ton whenever accessing the Internet and I honestly mainly use it only to read, helping me sleep easier). Sadly, I won't be able to join you for getting time off using my phone-- I'm heading out on vacation, and it's something that's definitely going to be needed to tackle some of my online homework at the time. Hopefully this works out!

    1. Thanks! Oh, that makes sense. Reading always helps me settle down for the night. Too bad. You could still participate, but just skip that portion of the challenge.

      Thanks for commenting!
