Screens | Part 1 / An Introduction

Good afternoon Dears!

How was your week?  Mine was pretty great.  We finished up Peter Pan and Wendy and had the cast party Sunday night.  More on that to come, but for now, let's jump into the post!

------------------------------------------------------

How much time do you spend on your phone/computer/ tablet a day?  15 minutes?  An hour?  3 hours?

Studies show the average American spends 10 hours and 39 minutes a day on their smartphones, tablets, video games, computer or TV.  That ends up being 156.01 days a year.  Over a lifetime that adds up to about…  21 years.  Assuming you have access to those devices for only 50 years.

Here is the real question, are those 21 years wasted, or gained?  I’m sure you really enjoyed all those movies you’ve seen.  And who could not enjoy browsing Pinterest for a little while?  Plus, if you have a blog you are learning about graphic design and all of that cool stuff, right?
Is spending time on screens truly bad?  Let’s evaluate the pros and cons.

1.  You can look things up ultra-fast.

2.  Be-ou-ti-ful music at the click of a button.

3.  Social media.  You get to see what everyone is doing all. The. Time.  Yay?

4.  Safety.  You can always call your mom when in a sticky situation.

1.  Constant distraction.   You know you want to respond to that message instead of finishing your math.

2.  It’s just plain bad for your eyes.  Think of them!  Constantly looking at that glowing screen.  Do your eyes ever hurt at the end of the day.  Well, screens are probably your problem.  You also blink far less.

3. Think of all the opportunities this world provides!  Are you working towards goals?  Are you really learning anything?  Or are you just watching kitty videos?  Let’s be honest here.

4.  We rely on our devices too much.  If we are over attached to them, how will we react in the case of a blackout?  We can survive without them, believe it or not.

5. You forget to listen to your body.  You are probably thirsty, or tired, or maybe you’re like me last Friday night and you really need to sleep.

6.  Do you want your future kids or grandkids to ask what you did when you were their age and say, “I sat on the couch for hours on end staring at the television screen playing video games”?

7. We use our phones as a form of procrastination.  We need to just do the things.

I’m sure there are many more pros and cons, but these are the ones that stand out to me.

So now we’re back to the beginning.  Are screens bad?  No.  They aren’t.  Spending hours on them is what’s bad.

Now that you’ve read about screening stats and pros and cons I’ll tell you where I’m going with this.  I am doing a 3 or 4 (I haven't decided yet, sorry!) part series.  Next, I will talk about whether or not you’re addicted to screens.

The series will lead up to a no screens challenge.  I’m super excited about this guys, so I'd love it if you would spread the word!  Stayed tuned for the next post!

Love,
Pip

Are those statistics crazy?
Are you excited for the challenge?

  1. That sounds like an awesome idea! I've been writing the first draft of my novel like crazy every evening/night and my eyes and fingers are exhausted. I plan on having my first draft finished by the beginning of July and as soon as I finish....I'm staying off the laptop for the whole month!

Also your blog design is lovely

  2. this is a great post!
i'll be the first to say that i love my laptop & phone because they have the power to connect me to other bloggers, my family, and my friends (especially those that live across the country)! on the other hand, it makes me sad to see kids & teens wasting their lives away on those devices. i'm glad my parents kept me off electronics when i was younger.

    1. Thank you!
Same! I have friends and family all over country, and some out of the country. Yeah, it's sad.
